The acropolis which means sacred rock in Greek is the most important site in Athens.   It is the cultural and political heart of Greece and it was here in the 5th century BC that rule by the people, "democracy" was born.

The people of Athens would meet here and vote on everything from the price of fish to declarations of war.  It was a simple system, if you voted yes you submitted a white pebble and if you were against a proposed motion a black one.  And whatever side had the most support won and the decision was final.

It was from this humble beginnings that all the world's democracies derived, from the English Parliament in London to the house of representatives in Washington.

UNESCO in 1987 designated the Acropolis as a world heritage site.
